As the Fall season gets into full swing so, too, do the notions of certain types of food. In recent years, there’s been an explosion of pumpkin-flavored everything. Grocery stores and restaurants make it a point to extend their offerings to match the demand for Fall flavors.

There are now several name brand cereals which bring out limited time pumpkin flavored options. In addition, there’s a variety of other items, such as spiced ciders; pumpkin-flavored coffee creamers; pumpkin rolls with cream cheese frosting; apple cider donuts; pumpkin bagels and English muffins; apple pies and turnovers; pumpkin pancakes; apple dumplings; pumpkin pie ice cream; hearty flavored soups...I don’t know about you, but this list is making me hungry!

So where can you go for the best recipes to add to your fall table? One tried and true go-to place is family recipes. Most families have a collection of recipes, often passed down from one generation to another. Check with your family and that the family of your significant other. You might be surprised at the delicious dishes that will result.

Bonus tip 1: These recipes, while tasty, are often not the healthiest. You may be able to create a healthier option by reducing the amount of butter or sugar, using a sugar substitute, etc.

Bonus tip 2: You can possibly expand the flavor or make it more of your own recipe by adding spices to your liking. We have far more spice options today than they did 75 years ago. So, if you are dealing with an older recipe, keep this in mind. Or perhaps there’s a spice you don’t care for in the original recipe. For example, some pumpkin pie recipes call for nutmeg and cinnamon. Not particularly fond of nutmeg, I choose to double the amount of cinnamon instead.

Here’s a tried and true recipe passed down from my great grandmother. Did you know jello has been around since 1897?

Raspberry Cranberry Mold

  • 1 can of crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 can of cranberry sauce
(You could possibly substitute a can of whole cranberries instead, but I have not tried it as whole cranberries are sometimes a bit tart for my taste.)
  • 1 cup of chopped walnuts (add more or less to your taste)
  • 2 small packages of raspberry gelatin
(I substitute with the sugar-free variety to reduce the sugar and carb count)

Empty contents of gelatin into large glass bowl. Add 2 cups of boiling water and stir thoroughly. Add can of cranberry sauce, chopping up into small pieces as you go. Now stir in the crushed pineapple, followed by 2 cups of cold water. And finally, add the walnuts and stir. The nuts will float to the top and basically serve as the top of the dish. And you’re done! Either cover dish and refrigerate or pour into a mold and refrigerate for several hours until set.

Note: this is a fast and easy dish to make a day ahead and will be one less thing you need to make Thanksgiving day.

Other Recipe Sources

If your own family recipes are in short supply, how about those from others? Ask friends or coworkers for their tried and true best Thanksgiving dishes. Or put a spin on the day by gathering a recipe or two from other cultures.

When all else fails, turn to the trusty internet. Here are some online resources to get you started:
